Replacing older patio doors
Many older patio doors become heavy, noisy or difficult to lock as rollers and tracks wear. Where the complete frame is being replaced, the new arrangement should be chosen around the width of the opening, furniture position and the way people move between the room and terrace.
Sliding doors preserve floor space and suit broad glazed openings. Hinged French doors provide a different opening pattern and can be the better choice where wall width and swing space allow them.
Sliding-door arrangements
Panel weight is carried by rollers and tracks that need to remain aligned. The number of tracks, opening direction, threshold, frame material and glass all change the result.
- Two and multi-panel layouts
- Aluminium or PVC frames
- Low thresholds where suitable
- Locks and safety glass
Aluminium, PVC and glass
Aluminium is often selected for wider sliding doors because its strength permits slimmer frames. PVC can suit smaller patio openings where insulation and sealing are priorities. Safety, solar control and comfort also affect the glass specification.
Sliding or hinged patio doors?
The practical difference is how the door uses the available opening and the space beside it.
| Consideration | Sliding doors | Hinged patio doors |
|---|---|---|
| Space | Panels stay within their tracks | Door leaves need clear swing space |
| Opening | Suited to broad glazed openings | Can open most of a smaller opening |
| Threshold | Track and floor levels determine the detail | Frame, drainage and floor levels still matter |
Thresholds, screens and persianas
Floor levels affect the available threshold detail. Mosquito screens and persianas should be planned with the door so their tracks, guides and handles do not obstruct one another.
Repair or replace
Dragging or difficult movement may be caused by rollers or alignment rather than failure of the whole system. Danny assesses the frame, tracks, hardware and glass before recommending replacement.
Measured at the property
Large doors cannot be quoted accurately from width and height alone. Access, surrounding finishes and floor levels are checked during a site visit in Jávea, Moraira, Dénia or Benitachell.
