Sliding or hinged patio doors
Sliding panels stay within their tracks and leave the floor clear beside the opening. This suits broad glazed doors and rooms where a hinged leaf would take up useful space.
Hinged patio doors need room to swing. They can open most of a smaller aperture at once and may suit openings where a fixed and sliding panel would leave too little clear width.
Aluminium is widely used for larger sliding panels because it supports broad areas of glass with slimmer frames. PVC is often chosen for smaller glazed doors where firm sealing and insulation are priorities.
Glass, tracks and thresholds
Panel size and glass weight affect the frame, rollers and ease of movement. The bottom track has to work with the inside and outside floor levels. Drainage and the existing finish around the opening also influence the threshold.
The glass should suit the size and position of the door without placing unnecessary weight on the moving parts.
Screens and persianas
A mosquito screen for a patio door requires its own track or guides. A persiana also needs space around the opening. Handles, cassettes and moving parts must not obstruct the main door.

Repairs to an existing sliding door
A heavy, noisy or uneven sliding door may have worn rollers, a damaged track or an alignment fault. Locks and handles can also fail while the main frame and glass remain usable.
